The University Graduate School (UGS), in partnership with FIU’s Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) Program, offers the Writing Fellows Program to support and empower advanced doctoral students committed to strengthening writing culture within their academic departments. This initiative provides a unique opportunity for graduate students to lead and sustain peer-based writing groups, while gaining pedagogical training, leadership experience, and a deeper understanding of disciplinary writing practices.

Current Writing Fellows

Program Overview

Writing Fellows are selected through a competitive application process and serve for two consecutive semesters. Fellows receive:

Specialized training in writing facilitation and disciplinary writing instruction
Hands-on experience leading peer writing groups
A $1,500 fellowship per semester (spring and summer)

Through their work, Fellows help build stronger scholarly communities and support graduate student success in writing-intensive milestones, including proposals, articles, and dissertations.

What Writing Fellows Do

Writing Fellows design and lead one of the following writing group formats tailored to their department’s needs:

Accountability Group: Focused on goal-setting, writing progress, and structured writing time.
Peer Review Group: Centered on providing and receiving feedback to strengthen clarity, structure, and disciplinary alignment in members’ drafts.
Hybrid Group: Combines goal-setting with peer feedback, balancing productivity and collaborative review.

Fellows also attend monthly check-ins, work closely with their program director, and help evaluate the program’s impact.

Eligibility

To be eligible, applicants must:

Be advanced doctoral students in good academic standing
Be enrolled full-time during the spring and summer semesters of participation
Demonstrate strong writing, communication, and peer mentoring interest
Have prior experience in formal or informal writing groups (preferred but not required)

Application Process

Applications typically include:

A cover page signed by your major professor and graduate program director
An academic CV
A writing sample (e.g., dissertation proposal, research paper, fellowship application)
An interview as part of the selection process
