The University Graduate School is committed to excellence in graduate education and is proud to offer fellowship opportunities for new and continuing students. It is important to note that funding for the fellowships is limited and very competitive. To be considered for specific awards, it is critical to submit a complete application prior to the stated deadline.

FIU Fellowships offered by UGS for Prospective Students

Undergraduate to Graduate Program (UtGP)

The FIU Undergraduate to Graduate Program (UtGP) will aid students who are committed to a FIU PhD program by providing support for a research experience with an FIU faculty member during their junior or senior year.


Presidential Fellowship (PF)

The Presidential Fellowship is utilized for the recruitment of outstanding Ph.D.-track students to graduate programs at FIU. Each fellowship provides a four-year award package to the fellow.
Support

For Fall 2021 admissions, presidential Fellows will have two options:

1. Presidential Fellows receive a stipend of $30,000 for four years. The University Graduate School (UGS) will provide the stipend, tuition waiver for 24 credits/year, and health insurance for two of the four years of the fellowship. The fellow’s graduate program is expected to provide an additional two years of funding support at the same level through a Teaching or Research Assistantship.

2. Presidential Fellows receive a stipend of $25,000 for two years and a stipend at the GA rate for two years. The UGS will provide the stipend, tuition waiver for 24 credits/year, and health insurance for two of the four years of the fellowship. The fellow’s graduate program is expected to provide an additional two years of funding support through a Teaching or Research Assistantship at the GA rate. In addition, Presidential Fellows will receive two years of housing at The One.

UGS Veteran’s Fellowship

In honor and recognition of our veterans’ service, the University Graduate School has established the UGS Veteran’s Fellowship. This fellowship provides support to student veterans to pursue their doctoral education at Florida International University. The UGS awards the Veteran’s Fellowship once a year in the Fall term. The fellowship includes two years of support with a $24,000 annual stipend plus a tuition waiver and individual health insurance, provided that the student veteran does not have leftover tuition funds on the GI Bill. If the student veteran has tuition funds on the GI Bill and health insurance is covered by the Armed Forces, UGS will cover the stipend.

FIU Inclusion Fellowship

The FIU Inclusion Fellowship was created by the University Graduate School to encourage promising undergraduate and master’s students who are underrepresented minorities* or people with disabilities, to pursue a Ph.D. degree at Florida International University. The Inclusion Fellowship will support Ph.D. students in any discipline for up to two years starting in the fall 2019 term. Two additional years of funding will be provided by the graduate program through a teaching or research assistantship. Preference will be given to students with prior research experience.

For Fall 2021 admissions, Inclusion Fellows will have two options:
1.Inclusion Fellows receive a $24,000 annual stipend for the first 2 years, a tuition waiver for 24 credits per year, and health insurance funded by UGS. The fellow’s graduate program is expected to provide two additional years of funding support through a Teaching or Research Assistantship.
2.Inclusion Fellows receive an $18,000 annual stipend for the first 2 years, a tuition waiver for 24 credits per year, and health insurance funded by UGS. The fellow’s graduate program is expected to provide two additional years of funding support at the GA- rate through a Teaching or Research Assistantship. In addition, Inclusion Fellows will receive two years of housing at The One.

Dissertation Year Fellowships (DYF)

Dissertation Year Fellowships (DYFs) provide support to highly qualified FIU doctoral students during the data analysis and writing phase of their dissertation. It is intended to facilitate the timely completion of high-quality manuscripts and dissertations. Students who are conducting outstanding research in their discipline and have established a notable record of publication during their doctoral studies (in comparison to others in their discipline) are favored in the application process. Dissertation Fellows are expected to graduate within 1 year after receiving the award.

Additional Fellowship opportunities for FIU students

Delores Auzenne Fellowship


Learn More

The Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and the Office of Civil Rights Compliance and Accessibility, in conjunction with the State University System, coordinate the Delores Auzenne Fellowship for minority graduate students.

Eligibility:
Is restricted to minority students who meet the following criteria:

  1. Have been accepted as a degree seeking student into graduate (master or doctoral) disciplines where minority graduate students are disproportionately underrepresented
  2. Are either citizens or have been permanent residents (a copy of your card must be provided) of the United States
  3. Have been classified as a Florida resident for tuition purposes for at least 1 year preceding the award of aid (Florida Statute 1009.21)
  4. Have met the eligibility requirements of Section 240.404, Florida Statutes, for award of State financial aid

Amount of Award:
Up to $5,000 per year.

Transdisciplinary Biomolecular and Biomedical Sciences (TBBS) Training Program

The Transdisciplinary Biomolecular and Biomedical Sciences (TBBS) Program, funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH), aims to provide fellows with an interdisciplinary and collaborative setting for doctoral training in biomedical research, implement effective evidence-based strategies for doctoral research training, and to prepare fellows for diverse roles in the biomedical workforce through the participation in various workshops and events.


Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships

The FLAS fellowship supports language training in Less-Commonly-Taught Languages (LCTLs), including Portuguese and Haitian Creole. The Summer Fellowship also includes the study of Quechua.

Full-time, degree-seeking FIU graduate and undergraduate students in any discipline who are completing coursework related to Latin America may apply. FLAS Fellowship recipients are required to complete at least one Latin American and Caribbean-related area studies course and one Portuguese, Haitian Creole, or Quechua (summer only) course each semester at FIU while holding the fellowship. Summer fellowships offer students the opportunity to participate in FLAS approved Summer Study Abroad programs. Students in the professional schools (Business, Law, Medicine, Journalism, Social Work, Engineering, etc.) and those planning a career in U.S. government service are strongly encouraged to apply.

Graduate Fellowships for STEM Diversity

Graduate Fellowships for STEM Diversity (formerly the National Physical Science Consortium) is a partnership between government agencies and laboratories, industry, and higher education. GFSD’s goal is to increase the number of US citizens with graduate degrees in the physical sciences and related engineering fields, emphasizing recruitment of a diverse applicant pool with special consideration given to underrepresented minority groups and females.

Eligible Fields: Astronomy, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geology, Materials Science, Mathematical Sciences, Physics, and their subdisciplines, and related engineering fields: Chemical, Computer, Electrical, Environmental, Mechanical Engineering

Academic Level: Undergraduate Seniors; Applicants at any stage of their graduate program (must be available to accept one summer of paid internship)

Duration: 2-3 years but can be renewed up to 6 years by the employer sponsor.

If selected for GFSD, incoming and current FIU students will receive:

$20K + UGS enhancement to match a Graduate Assistantship funding level
