Dissertation Year Fellowship Guidelines - Fall 2008
Dissertation Year Fellowships provide a stipend of $25,000 for 12 months, or $8,334 per term.
The Dissertation Year Fellowships will be available starting on September 1, 2008. The deadline for application is May 12, 2008 in the department and May 22, 2008 in the University Graduate School .
Fellowship recipients must enroll for three semester hours of dissertation credit during each semester and during the summer session. The UGS will provide tuition waiver for Dissertation Year Fellowship recipients for three (3) hours per term. Recipients must be within nine (9) dissertation credits of completing all requirements for the degree by the start of Fall 2008.
Publications resulting from research supported in part through a Dissertation Year Fellowship should acknowledge financial support of a Florida International University Dissertation Year Fellowship. A copy of any such publication should be sent to the University Graduate School.
Students should pay particular attention to the following requirements and those on the application form. Applications not meeting the guidelines in all respects will not be considered.
Guidelines
for Students:
An approved dissertation proposal and Form D-3 must be on file in the UGS by the May 5, 2008 deadline.
The student must be within nine (9) dissertation credits of completing all requirements by the start of Fall 2008.
Letters of recommendation should be obtained from the advisor and two other faculty members (see application form).
Attach a one page overview in NON-SPECIALIST language which explains the project and its significance, along with an explanation of where the research currently stands and when the dissertation is expected to be completed.
Describe the dissertation project in no more than five double-spaced, typewritten pages. The description must be clearly written, but is not limited to non-specialist language as is the overview.
Include a list of publications, meeting presentations, papers submitted, etc. that have come out of the research.
Recipients cannot hold other employment during the term of the fellowship.
DEADLINE: The deadline for receipt in the department is May 12, 2008. The departments are required to submit their ranked nominees to the University Graduate School no later than May 22, 2008.
Guidelines for Departments:
Each doctoral degree-granting department or school may submit two Dissertation Year Fellowship applications.
The department must rank order the two applications and submit one original and nine (9) copies of each application accompany by a covering memo to the University Graduate School no later than May 22, 2008.
Departments which had one or more students who received a Dissertation Year Fellowship in prior years must accompany any new applications with a covering memo summarizing the accomplishments of prior recipients of the Dissertation Year Fellowship.
