Mission

The mission of the graduate student Professional Development Program is to prepare graduate students for a highly competitive and demanding job market. The graduate student Professional Development Program will supplement research skills provided by graduate programs with four competencies – academic writing and communication, professoriate training, leadership, and well-being.

Competencies

Communication

Graduate students will often find themselves sharing research in a variety of ways to a diverse audience. Under this competency, graduate students will learn to apply effective communication skills that will prepare them for job opportunities in academia as well as industry, government and non-profit organizations. Workshops include APA (American Psychological Association) citation style, The Literature Review, Writing a Personal Statement, Turning your dissertation into Publication, Grant writing, Presenting at Academic Conferences, Library Search, Curricula Vita (CV) Preparation, etc.

Professoriate Training

This competency addresses the needs of doctoral students aspiring to become professors. Teaching is an important responsibility of a professor, and training in teaching provides graduate students with a significant advantage in their faculty careers. In collaboration with the FIU Center for the Advancement of Teaching, workshops are offered to provide graduate students with the opportunity of developing skills necessary for excellence in teaching and learning. The Center for the Advancement of Teaching offers certificates to graduate students completing teaching training program. Another important skill to become a successful professor is to develop grantsmanship skills. In collaboration with the UGS/DoR Graduate Grants Center, training and assistance are provided to graduate students to apply for fellowships and grants.

Leadership

Research leaders in all disciplines have skills to envision future trends in their disciplines, apply their expertise to address needs of the society, communicate effectively to stakeholders of diverse backgrounds, and attract resources in their chosen careers. In collaboration with the Center for Leadership at FIU, workshops and lectures are offered to benefit graduate students in these important skills. Distinguished lectures from industry and academic leaders, and workshops on developing networking skills and ethical research are offered on a periodic basis.

Well-being

Many elements can contribute to well-being. Graduate students find the need to balance academic and personal lives during the pursuit of their graduate studies. The mental strain caused by research endeavors makes it essential for students to have a conscious approach to well-being. Workshops under this competency will include: Stress Management, Time Management, Conflict Resolution, Staying Motivated in Graduate School, etc.
